Jurriaan Geldermans, Noordhollands Dagblad.

Seeing in the Dark, this Title may sound a bit strange to you but it is possible to "See" in the Dark. How? By using your non-visual senses.

Yanyn and Tinah Visser started this Initiative in 1999 in a former church in Velsen-Noord, a little village about 15 miles west from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Yany and Tinah both blind are running the center in which this Initiative is situated themselves. With help of other blind and partially sighted Guides they offer Seeing in the Dark as a unique adventure for the non-visual senses. Trivial situations have been built such as a Park, little Shop, Street and Road and Bar/discotheque. All is there except light.
Walking in the Park you can hear the characteristic sounds of a park. You can feel all kind of objects with your hands and with your feet, with shoes on, you can feel where you walk upon, if its pebbles or grass or something different. In the Shop you have to use your hands to discover what is there to see. Do you have the courage to cross the road without any light? And how about ordering and paying a drink in a bar without any light and dancing in the dark.

This adventure will challenge your non visual senses to do their utmost best. With help of indications of the Guide, a cane and your highly focused non visual senses this adeventure will be a once-in-a-lifetime Experience for you. You will gain more awareness about your own abilities and possibilities but Seeing in the Dark also will give you an opportunity to get a peek in the lives of blind and partially sighted people because during and after the Tour you will have the opportunity to communicate with your guides and ask them any questions about their way of living and their perception of the world. Most people can come up with all kind of things they think blind people can not do but what about what they, blind people, are able to, where they up to, their multiple possibilities. That is something most people do not know. Seeing in the Dark is meant to create a way to gain more understanding by experience and dialogue.

Everyone who is going on this Tour will gain something different from it. How about communication, (self)trust, listening, working together, etc. In the Netherlands we offer programs for (elementary) schools, all kind of organizations in Health Care etc, companies, Families and Individuals. Everybody who is interested in a Dark Experience is welcome if its with a family or in a teambuilding session or leadership training. We can weave every theme into the Tour and are able to adjust it to the wishes and needs of the visitor(s). And all this contributes to better Understanding about: different people, different lives.
